Urinary catheterization is referred to the process of inserting a urinary catheter into the bladder of the patient through his or her urethra. The urinary catheter is usually made up of silicon, or latex or the polyurethane tube.

The urinary catheter is usually made up of silicon, or latex or the polyurethane tube. The urinary catheterization helps the patient to release urine and drain it out freely from his or her bladder. The urine is collected in the drain bag that is attached to the silicone tube. Sometimes, the urinary catheters are used for injecting medicines or liquids in order to treat or diagnose certain bladder conditions found in humans.
Generally, urinary catheterizations are performed by a nurse or a medical assistant, but it is possible to self catheterize oneself these days. Due to some medical condition of a patient permanent catheterization is done. This is called indwelling catheter. But the most commonly used are the intermittent catheters. The intermittent catheters are the ones that are used and removed afterwards.
Urinary catheters are available in different sizes and materials. Apart from the silicone and latex, Teflon catheters are also readily available in the market nowadays. The different types of catheters that are found in the market include coude tip, Foley catheters and straight. The Foley catheters are soft rubber or plastic tubes. Such tubes are inserted in the bladder of the patient in order to drain out urine.
Urinary catheterization is required when the patient is suffering from:
a. Urine leakage or urinary incontinence caused by urinary tract infection, UTI.
b. When the patient is unable to control the flow of urine he requires a catheter.
c. The problem of urine retention requires a urinary catheter.
d. When the patient cannot release all the urine and empty the bladder, a catheter helps him.
e. Medical conditions like spinal cord injury, dementia or multiple sclerosis make the person to get bed ridden for sometimes. Urinary catheters are required to drain out urine during this time.
f. Gynaecological or prostate surgeries make urinary catheters necessary.
Generally there are three different kinds of catheters available in the market. These are condom catheter, intermittent catheter and the indwelling catheter. All of these catheters are used for different reasons. It's important that you know the usage of all three.
a. Condom catheter - Elderly men who are suffering from dementia uses condom catheters.
b. Indwelling catheter - Catheters that are permanently placed inside to drain urine out of the bladder.
c. Intermittent catheter - Catheters that are used for some time and removed after usage.
